On the way

to the mailbox I

stop, heart

thrilling.  The air

vibrates, charged

with primordial

cries, a crazed gibberish.

I blink and look,

and look some more

searching, trying

to pinpoint their place

in the cloudless sky.

Finally, they appear –

wave upon wave

 higher

than I ever expect

necks stretched

flat with

wings like sails, they

soar, caught

in the immutable current

of spring.
