redeemed

passage

The light is crystalline
as I climb, my breath
coming faster. Vines
encroach the old stone stairs

with leaves like shooting stars.
Cresting the hill, I pause.
Tall grass shines in the sun.
A meadow lies before me, embedded

with wildflowers. Their warm
fragrance laces the air, leading me
on to next hill, where a
cemetery blooms – row upon row

of slender, stones
tilting this way and that, marking
the final resting places
of the unclaimed, their names

forgotten. Each stone’s face
marbled by algae, abstract
paintings signed by
nature’s inclusive hand.
